Everyday when we turn on the news, we see bad things happening all around us. People’s lives are being torn apart because of violence and hatred. Innocent people are being killed for no reason. With all of this stuff going on, what are we to do? I mean, I am only just one small person in this whole world. The choices I make cannot possibly effect everyone else.
You may think that, but trust me, they do. However small your action may be, it will affect someone in one way or another. Something as simple as smiling to someone can make them feel loved. That one action could have changed their whole day. My neighbor did this project last year that was about trying to spread love to make someone feel good. She went to a local Walmart and gave people little notes saying you are loved, you are beautiful, and things like that. At the end she said how one lady came up to her after she gave her the notes in tears. The women told her that she was having a really rough day, and her action gave her a smile that made her feel loved. When I saw the video, I was awestruck. I thought that what she did was so cool. She didn’t do it to be recognized, but to make someone feel good. That’s how it should be. We shouldn’t do a kind act because we want to be seen. The point is to do it out of the kindness of your heart because you care for a certain person or cause.
This year, our school is focusing on the theme of kindness. It is so important to our school staff so we had the 2nd Annual Kindness Week this year to raise awareness of being kind. At the end of that week, they said that kindness isn’t something we take one week out of the year to share, it’s something we should show everyday. Recently, I have noticed a lot of unkind acts going on in my grade. People aren’t showing kindness and respect to others as we always should. It is a really sad thing to see happening. I just don’t understand how people can be so disrespectful sometimes. When I hear about people not being treated well I always think this, “You never know when you or your friends time on this Earth is up. Wouldn’t it be awful to leave someone knowing you never treated them kindly or with respect?” That is such a great reminder that this is not our life. It’s God’s life that he has given to us. He wants us to live our life for others and to build them up, not down. So when it’s the end of your day, will you be able to say today I lived my life for others and brought them closer to the Kingdom through my actions or not? Today, let’s focus on being living examples of Christ and how he wants us to treat those he has so graciously placed in our lives.
Praying for you,
Anna Zacharias
